When Damar Hamlin, safety for the Buffalo Bills, collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest on January 2, 2023, the world of journalism was awash with ethical questions about the violence inherent in contact sports, particularly football, and the lifelong, and sometimes life-shortening health implications for athletes. This month, along with numerous Black History exhibits, FDU library staff take a deeper look at the intersections of American football with books and films delving into topics such as the history of college football, race relations and protest in college and national football, the big business of football, how politics and football overlap, and the recent neuroscience about the devastating and widespread effects of football concussions on brain health.
