ARTH 1062: Latino Cultural Arts

Pre-Columbian, Pre-Hispanic, Ancient Mesoamerican Art

The sources on this page (and beyond) are for the Pre-Columbian art assignment.

Tips for Researching Ancient Art: Often times ancient artists will be unnamed, so using the name of an artist as a keyword to research with will often be impossible.

The following can be helpful to focus on when researching Ancient Art:

  • Broad historical context on what was happening at the approximate location and time during which your art was likely created
  • What types of materials the artwork was created from - How would they have been sourced? What was the significance of those materials among the ancient peoples?
  • The role a type of item would have played - Was it ceremonial or spiritual? For daily use? For burial?
  • Styles and techniques used to create the art
  • Iconography (visual images and symbols) used in the art and their historic / cultural significance among the ancient peoples
