What is data visualization? Visualizing data is the process of presenting it in a pictorial or graphical manner. Think maps or infographics. There are many steps beyond PowerPoint that integrate mathematics and psychology to strengthen data analysis and interpretation.
So what is data? Use data to inform your research, whether it is creating original data in a survey or viewing data online. Examples are the US Census, literacy rates, global health, and so much more.
How can this help my research as a student? You can set yourself apart from your peers by generating an interesting infographic or map. These systems and those listed below let us question, analyze, and interpret data to understand relationships, patterns, and trends. You can add an electronic module to a research paper or a thesis. This can be a conversation starter for a graduate school or job application. There may be a digital storytelling opportunity in your dissertation.
How will this help after you graduate? Analyzing a data set in any field is a life skill that can be applied in many career paths. In addition to having strong writing, being able to interpret and articulate trends and relationships about a subject will help you succeed in any career.
