CHEM 2263: Home

Welcome

This is a library course guide designed to help CHEM 2263 - Organic Chem I students find research.

Today we will:

  • Learn how to search SciFinder-n and the FDU Library Discovery Catalog

  • Make sure you have what you need to create in-text citations and reference lists in ACS style

  • Show you how to get additional assistance with citations, library resources, and research, should you need it

Make a SciFinder-n account

Use the following link to "Create an account." Fill out the form. You will need to confirm your FDU email address to complete registration.

We will be using the Structure Editor to search for the transformation in your assignment. Here are a couple of video tutorials on how to search the Structure Editor.

After you have drawn your structure, search using the "Reaction" tab at the top of the search box and then click the Search icon.

Assignment Requirements

Please refer to the full assignment sheet provided by your professor. For the purpose of this class, we will be focusing in on the following:

  • Find 4 or more academic journal articles using the SciFinder-n database

    • Visit this guide on tips for evaluating scientific research articles

  • One of the references must be a Grignard reaction

  • Articles must contain (in body of article text) information detailing whether the reaction is a Grignard or not

  • Webpages and textbooks will not be accepted as sources

  • Articles must be cited using in-text citations and a reference list in ACS citation style

Citation Management

Your professor encourages you to use a citation management system like Mendeley (or Zotero).

A citation management system is like a citation generator but more robust. It includes a source library where you can store the full text of your articles alongside the citation details. It has web connectors that allow you to save articles and sort directly into your folders and a plug-in that allows you to generate in-text citations and reference lists in MS Word.
