Fall 2020 Library Policies


Listed below are temporary policy changes due to COVID-19 health and safety restrictions.

Circulation Policy Updates

Materials will be checked out for regular loan periods. When books are returned, please allow for a full week before your account is updated, as the library will be quarantining all returned books for 5 days before checking in.

No fines will be assessed for existing materials that are checked out, and there will be no fines for the semester. However, if books are not returned within three months, there will be a bill for the book added to your account at the end of the semester. Returning the book will remove the bill, and we can negotiate the purchase of a replacement book rather than the full charge if the book is lost. Bills can be resolved by speaking to the Circulation Coordinator at your campus library.

How to Return Library Books

Please return all books and other materials to the bookdrops outside of the libraries; please do NOT bring returns to the Circulation Desk. All returned books need to be handled according to staff COVID procedures and quarantined before checking in.


How to Check Out Library Books

In order to minimize risk to our Access Services staff on all campuses, the FDU libraries will implement contactless checkout for the Fall 2020 semester. All library stacks are closed.

If you need a book from any of our campus libraries:

  1. Visit the library catalog to find the items you need. You can find the link at, under “Search Discovery Catalog”.
  2. When you are on the catalog home page, click on “Sign In” in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  3. Sign in using your FDU Net ID and password.
  4. When you find the item you want to check out, click on the title link.
  5. A screen will open up with information about the item. Click on the “Send to My Library” button.
  6. Choose your pickup location, and click “Submit”.

You will receive an email when your item is available for pickup.

Florham Campus Library, please go to the Circulation Desk at the library entrance, and let the staff member know that you have books waiting, and give your last name. Staff will place your books on the other end of the Circulation Desk, where you can pick them up.

Giovatto Library users can pick up their requested materials from the Reception Desk by the library entrance.


Please note that if you request a recently returned book, your request may not be filled for at least a week, as newly returned books will be quarantined for 5 days before checking them in. Requests are only pulled Monday through Friday, so requests placed on Friday afternoon or over the weekend may not be filled until early the following week.

If you do not receive an email within 48 hours about your materials, please call the Circulation Desk at your campus library.

Space Usage

The library stacks, collections, and archives will all be closed to everyone except library staff. Browsing will not be permitted. View our circulation policies tab for obtaining print materials. Library buildings will be open to current students, faculty and staff by appointment only in order to follow the University’s health and safety regulations (maintaining social distancing, occupancy numbers and contact tracing protocols).  The Library looks forward to welcoming alumni and visitors when we resume regular operations.

Library Building Hours 

Interlibrary Loan

There will be no interlibrary loan of books for the Fall semester. Students with loans from last semester may of course return books, and these will be processed and returned to their respective institutions.

Interlibrary Loan of articles will continue to take place for the Fall semester.


InterCampus Loans

InterCAMPUS loans (i.e., loaning between FDU libraries) will still take place during the Fall semester.

Information Literacy

Information literacy instruction for the Fall 2020 semester will be held online only. Requests for in-person instruction will be dependent upon the necessity and circumstances of the request.

Laptop Loans

Laptop loans will be administered by FDU IT. Please visit their web portal for more information.


There will be NO print reserves for the Fall 2020 semester. Please contact the library about e-reserves.
